As the winter season unfolds, Queensland is experiencing a significant surge in Influenza A cases. This year's flu season is proving to be exceptionally severe, and the impact is being felt across the state.

Despite the flu season having peaked earlier in the month, reported flu cases in Queensland are almost 10 x times the expected number for this time of year, with close to 550 cases reported state-wide.

Why This Flu Season is Different

Medical experts are predicting a challenging season ahead, with a potential "triple whammy" of influenza, RSV, and COVID-19 rates expected to rise as children head back to school. Dr. John Garrard, Queensland's Chief Health Officer, has highlighted the strain on our healthcare system, particularly noting the alarming rise in hospital admissions among children

"About 20 children are being admitted to hospital each day with the flu," Dr. Garrard stated, "and this number is expected to rise to 50 within the next two or three weeks."

Two strains of influenza A are of particular concern this year, affecting large parts of the state. Most people presenting to hospitals are not vaccinated against influenza, putting additional pressure on the already strained emergency departments.

Vaccination is especially crucial for vulnerable groups, including people over 65, children under 5, and pregnant women. Getting vaccinated not only protects you but also helps reduce the spread of the flu.

With the return to school, we can expect to see an accelerated transmission of respiratory infections across Queensland.
