A Severe Flu Season is Coming - Here’s How to Get Ahead

As the cooler months begin to settle in, health authorities are sounding the alarm: this year’s flu season is expected to be one of the most severe Australia has experienced in recent years. According to the latest data from the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS), there has already been a dramatic increase in confirmed influenza cases in 2025, before winter has even begun.

To date, over 46,300 laboratory-confirmed influenza cases have been reported across the country. This marks a surge of more than 50% compared to the previous record for flu cases recorded between January and March 2024. These figures suggest that it will be a particularly aggressive and early flu season.

Why Is This Year Expected to Be So Bad? There are a number of factors contributing to this sharp rise

  • Vaccine Fatigue
  • More people travelling overseas
  • Reduced immunity
  • A return to pre-pandemic social behaviours
  • New strains of the influenza virus

With the potential for widespread illness and pressure on healthcare services, now is the time to take preventative action.

What Can You Do to Protect Yourself and Your Family? Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect yourself and your loved ones from the flu. It not only reduces your risk of getting sick but also helps minimise the severity of symptoms if you do catch the virus.

In addition to vaccination, maintaining good hygiene practices like regular handwashing and staying home when unwell, can make a big difference in slowing the spread.

Who is at risk? The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) is strongly encouraging everyone aged six months and older to be diligent with their vaccines this flu season. Particular attention should be given to those at increased risk of serious illness or hospitalisation due to the flu, including:

  • Pregnant women
  • First Nations people
  • Children under five
  • Immunocompromised
