Why is a heart health check important?
What is a heart check?
Cardiovascular disease and stroke are the leading cause of death for both men and women in Australia. Do you know what your risk is? Coming to see your GP for a regular Heart Health Check can help you understand your risk, put together a plan, and look at necessary medication.
What is a heart check and why do I need one?
Coronary heart disease is when arteries supplying blood to the heart become clogged or blocked.
Many people may not be aware of their own risk factors such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol which can lead to coronary heart disease.
During a heart check, we will look at your history and lifestyle, check your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels. If needed, our Care Plan Nurse can discuss a plan with you to improve your risks, and we can discuss potential medications.
What can I do to lower my risk?
Once you’ve seen a GP for a heart health check, you can discuss some lifestyle changes that can help lower your risk. A healthy diet, and regular exercise is important to heart health. In addition, if you are a smoker, it’s a good time to consider giving up, and we can also look at what we can do to control your cholesterol and blood pressure levels.
